Underground Utilities: Coordination Items Before Construction
Underground utility work is a coordination exercise as much as a trenching exercise. The plans, connection points, utility information and inspection path should be understood before construction begins.

Provide the current utility documents.
Utility plans, civil drawings, connection requirements and available records establish the intended work. If the project is permitted or engineered, those documents should guide the scope and any required inspections.
Where information is incomplete, identify the open items early rather than assuming field conditions will match an older drawing.
Coordinate locates, access and connection points.
Existing utilities must be located and protected before excavation. The site team should also identify proposed tie-in locations, easements, traffic or access constraints, and whether another party controls a connection or shutdown.
Trench routing and staging affect other site activities. Coordination is especially important where utility work overlaps with foundations, paving, retaining structures or active operations.
Plan the inspection and restoration path.
Inspections, testing, backfill requirements and restoration are project-specific. They should be identified in the scope along with responsibility for scheduling and records.
After utility work, the site may need grading, concrete, paving, landscaping or other restoration. Discuss those handoffs up front.
